Description, free life

There are 24 species of Pyrrhurian parrots (they are also classified as red-tailed parrots). Birds, depending on the variety, have a different color of plumage, and also differ in size.

The main color of the feathers is green, most species have brownish-red tail feathers. On the breast, the feathers have a peculiar pattern resembling scales or stripes. Most of the pyrrurium subspecies are named for their distinctive external features:

  • one of the subspecies green-cheeked red-tailed parrot on the cheeks has bright green plumage,
  • in the pearl parrot, on the upper part of the breast, on the neck in front and behind, the feathers are beautifully colored gray-blue and edged with yellow,
  • yellow-winged inner feathers are bright yellow,
  • in the white-eared red-tailed parrot, the ears, the neck in front, the goiter have a beautiful white plumage,
  • in a brown-eared parrot, the ears, breast and throat are gray-brown in color, bordered by dark stripes.

It is almost impossible to distinguish a female from a male, since they are the same in size and specific color. Sex can only be determined through a genetic test or X-ray.

Pyrrhur parrots inhabit the territories of South America (Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay). They can be found both in the forests of the foothills at an altitude of 1300 meters above sea level, and near agricultural corn fields.

These parrots are herbivorous, in their natural environment they eat spikelets of cereals, grains, herbs, exotic fruits, berries, young twigs of shrubs and trees.

Birds nest in the hollows of tall trees. The female makes a clutch of two to nine eggs (depending on the subspecies). While the female incubates eggs, the male guards the nest and brings her food.

Chicks hatch after 22-28 days. After about 5-6 weeks, they leave the nest, but they are still fed by their parents for two to three weeks until they become completely independent.

The nature, features, disadvantages of pyrrhur parrots

Reviews of the owners of pyrrhur parrots often contradict each other: some say that a noisy pet lives in the house, wayward, unpredictable, which can scream loudly, unpleasantly, bite a hesitating person, breaks everything that falls on its beak. Other owners claim that the Pyrrúras are calm birds, even phlegmatic and not loud.

Most likely, negative reviews are written by those owners who have caught an untamed parrot. If a bird has been in contact with a person from birth, then it remains tame, playful, and positive in adulthood.

In most cases, pyrruria parrots are extremely friendly, love affection, and easily get along with other pets. Although they are not recommended to be lodged in the same cage with other species of parrots, as adults can sometimes show aggression towards other birds and strangers.

They can reproduce human speech, but they remember a rather limited vocabulary of words and phrases.Sometimes it seems that in order to memorize a new word or phrase, they “free up” space in their brain: they simply “throw out” old words from it.

Watch in this video how the green-cheeked pyrrurh can speak:

These birds do not know how to utter melodic trills and singing, they can really be loud, making harsh loud sounds with pleasure.

Important! Given the changeable mood of red-tailed parrots, inexperienced owners should not get them, as they may simply not cope with the temperament of these birds.

Weigh your options: a feathered pet will need to pay a lot of attention every day. Healthy parrots will not sit silently in a cage all day long. They need to communicate with the person who tamed them, in games, various activities. If you have several hours daily to communicate with a parrot, feel free to start it, surround it with care and love. When meeting its beloved owner, the pyrrúra sways from side to side and nods its head, like a cockatoo.

Despite their small size, such intellectually developed birds subtly feel the attitude towards themselves, as well as the psychological state of the owner. Penetrating your trust, becoming your friend, they are able to dispel melancholy and cheer up with their tricks.

Home care and maintenance

The humid forests of South America, in which the pyrrhurian parrots live, have a certain climate, which it is desirable to repeat for pets. It is necessary to monitor the humidity (at least 70%) and the air temperature in the room. To increase the humidity, you can use special humidifiers or install a bathtub directly in the cage, because the pyrrhura, like all parrots, love to swim. You can verify this by watching the video:

The most interesting thing is, despite the fact that pyrrhurian parrots are thermophilic, they can tolerate a temperature that is rather low for exotic birds (+ 10-15 ° C) without any special consequences.

Whichever pet you come across: calm or overly active, the apartment for him should be spacious. These are territorial birds, they require a lot of space to live. Given the length of the parrot, you need to take a cage of such a size that he can easily flip from place to place in it without touching the walls and roof with his wings. The minimum size is 60x60x120 cm.

The bird will need to be released every day to fly outside the cage. The flight of the pyrrur is unusual: they are able to abruptly change direction both vertically and horizontally. This ability is given to them thanks to the stepped tail, its structure resembling a fan.

If you have the opportunity to organize an aviary for the parrot, you can not let him walk around the room, which will allow you not to fear for the safety of furniture and everything that may cause unhealthy interest in the parrot.

The cage (aviary) must have feeders, a drinking bowl, and perches for sitting. It is best if the poles are made of a tree untreated from the bark - due to their rigid structure, the parrot's claws will naturally grind off.

It is also very important that there are branches in the cage for gnawing. They are completely indifferent to bright toys, but they chew on branches with pleasure, thereby grinding off the horny layer of the beak.

The key to the health of domestic birds is a varied, balanced diet. Do not feed the birds with one grain all the time, this will cause intestinal problems. In addition to grain mixtures, pyrrhur parrots need to be given daily:

  • fresh vegetables and fruits (carrots, lettuce, broccoli, radishes, zucchini, young corn, peppers, pears, apples, grapes, citrus fruits, pomegranates),
  • various wild-growing herbs (dandelion leaves, plantain, shoots and twigs of fruit trees), from time to time give sprouted grain,
  • once a week, parrots are prepared crumbly porridge in water without sugar, salt, oil (buckwheat, oatmeal, rice),
sometimes fermented milk products, boiled eggs, honey, bread soaked in milk can be given in small quantities.

During the breeding season, the diet of pyrrurium parrots should contain calcium-containing and protein products, daily sprouted grain, mineral dressings.

At home, some species of pyrrurium parrots reproduce well. The formed pair is deposited from other pets in a separate aviary. A nesting house is placed there in advance, in the role of which is a wooden structure, similar to a birdhouse. It can also be a nest box (a stump of rotten wood).

The aviary should have material (grass, twigs) from which the birds will build a nest. Be prepared for the fact that parents will actively defend their nest, even resorting to bites, so do not disturb them once again.

If you properly organize food and living conditions, a couple will be able to bring and raise two broods in one mating season. Moreover, the first one can not be separated from the parents and new offspring, if the aviary is spacious enough for everyone.

Parrot choice, price, life expectancy

In captivity, under good conditions, pyrrhur parrots can live 15-20 years, therefore it is important to take a responsible approach to the choice and purchase of a pet.

The price of a pyrrur parrot ranges from 6,000 to 12,000 rubles. It depends on several factors: the age of the bird, color, place of purchase, degree of domestication. It is not worth saving when trying to buy a bird of unknown origin. You can face a lot of problems (diseases, behavioral disorders, aggressiveness or fear towards a person, etc.), after which you will only share negative reviews in relation to these parrots.

Chicks that appear in nurseries and professional breeders obviously live in better conditions than, for example, in wide-profile pet shops, where conditions of keeping are often completely unsuitable for birds.

Wild, sick, or old birds may also be sold on hand or in the market.

Therefore, it is very important to carefully consider the pyrrur before buying. The bird should have smooth, beautiful plumage (tousled, with kinks indicates any disease), clean eyes, nose, cloaca without discharge, the bird can revive when you appear, show interest. If you see a bird that sits motionless on a perch and cackles, does not show any interest in others, refuses to eat, has contaminated feathers around the cloaca, discharge from the eyes and wax, be prepared for long-term treatment of the pet.

Pyrrhur parrots are a great choice for bird lovers. If you want a tame pet, a quickly and easily trained, sociable, affectionate companion to appear in your house, get a chick, not an adult bird. Then you will have many years ahead of you with a life full of bright colors and positive emotions.
