Green-headed Short-tailed Sunbird / Hedydipna collaris

The red-headed caik, also known as the red-headed white-bellied parrot, is one of the rare birds that are not often found as pets.

Appearance, dimensions

The Latin name of the species is Pionites leucogaster. Average weight - 165-170 grams. Length - 23 cm. From the name it is easy to guess the elements of color - an orange "hat" and white tummy and chest. The cheeks, legs and back of the body are yellow, the wings are green. The beak is ivory. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed. Chicks can be distinguished by the brown-black feathers scattered on the back of the head, yellow feathers on the belly and a dark iris of the eye, which changes color to an orange-brown color as they mature.

There are three subspecies of the red-headed parrot: P.l. leucogaster, P.l. xanthurus, P.l. xanthomeria.

According to experts, life expectancy can be about 30 years. As for documentary confirmed data, the International Zoo Yearbook provides information about an individual that has lived for 26 years. Longer life cases have not been confirmed, but this may be due to the fact that this species is rare, and, therefore, there is little confirmed data.

Home content

By nature, this is a very active bird, therefore it is recommended to choose a spacious and durable cage for them. The minimum dimensions of a lattice apartment are those where it is possible to make a full flap of the wings and not touch anything. It is advisable to place a sufficient number of toys, nibbles and foraging cages inside the cage, which will help take up the free time of this feathered with an active character. Red-headed kaiki can memorize and copy various sounds, melodies, they learn tricks well, but their ability to speak is very limited. Note that despite the significant similarity, the cost of red-headed caiks is higher than that of black-headed ones, due to their rarity.

We recommend that all future owners familiarize themselves with the following additional materials on keeping winged pets:

  • Feeding parrots - a detailed overview of all the components of a healthy diet, including grains, herbs, fruits, berries, vegetables, cereals.
  • Parrot cage catalog - a list of lattice apartments that are available for sale in our store. The catalog has the ability to filter by poultry size and manufacturer.
  • How to tame a parrot to your hands is a taming technique based on sequential steps: to get interested in communication, identify a treat, offer a treat from your hands, gradually complicating the task.

Lifestyle in nature

Their range is South America, in particular Bolivia, Peru and Brazil. Prefer subtropical and humid tropical forests in the lowlands. They are social creatures, keep in pairs or flocks of up to 30 individuals. Clutch - up to three eggs. The incubation period is 24-27 days. And the chicks leave the nest at the age of 2.5 months.
